i would think that the greatest challenge in a family business would lie in the third generation.
the second generation usually doesn't have to do much. apply the same formula and not do something reckless like gamble or do something stupid and it is likely to remain there if not more successful. however the third generation can't do the same because it would have been years since the company has been founded. the environment has changed. if its trade has been so successful competitors would have found its way in. not to mention complacency creeping in as well. the third generation would have been well fed well sheltered well schooled and wouldn't have been brought up the same way as his father or his grandfather may have did. he has to seek new ways new ideas to keep them ongoing.
it is a big challenge. to keep his footing. to prevent anything from going south. to bring it to greater heights. so as not to undo the good his forefathers had done. and to ensure that his dependents enjoy the benefits he sow.
steady feet don't fail me now.
